National Traffic Safety Management is seeking a reliable, safety-focused Crash Truck Driver to operate a Truck Mounted Attenuator (TMA) vehicle in support of traffic control operations on highway construction, maintenance, and other work sites. The Crash Truck Driver acts as a mobile safety barrier, protecting work crews and the traveling public from oncoming traffic by positioning the TMA vehicle ahead of or behind active work zones as required. This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgment under pressure, and a commitment to following all traffic control plans and safety protocols in a high-speed highway environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate a truck-mounted attenuator (TMA) vehicle on highway work sites in accordance with site-specific traffic control plans (TCPs) and OTM Book 7 standards
- Position the crash truck correctly to shield workers and equipment from moving highway traffic, adjusting placement as work zones shift or move
- Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including air brake systems, and report any mechanical issues immediately
- Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices (signs, cones, barrels, arrow boards) as directed
- Communicate effectively with the traffic control supervisor, flaggers, and crew members via radio or hand signals
- Monitor highway traffic flow and site conditions continuously, remaining alert to hazards and reporting unsafe conditions
- Maintain accurate daily logs, including hours worked, mileage, and incident reports
- Follow all company safety policies, MTO/provincial regulations, and site-specific safety requirements
- Remain in the vehicle and stay alert at all times while stationed in an active highway work zone
- Assist with loading/unloading of traffic control equipment as needed
Qualifications
- Valid DZ or AZ driver's licence with a clean driving record
- Air Brake (Z) endorsement required
- Previous experience operating a TMA or similar heavy vehicle on highway sites preferred
- Book 7 and Traffic Control Person (TCP) certification an asset, or willingness to obtain
- Working at Heights, WHMIS, and other relevant safety certifications an asset
- Ability to remain focused and calm in high-traffic, high-speed highway environments
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and early mornings
- Physically able to sit for extended periods and perform light manual labor (setting up signs/cones)
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions precisely
- Required to join the LiUNA union as a condition of employment
Working Conditions
- Work is performed outdoors on active highways in all weather conditions
- Exposure to high-speed traffic, construction noise, and roadside hazards
- Shift lengths and schedules vary based on project requirements, mostly nights
